Teller Training Essentials is designed to significantly reduce new hire teller training time and costs while improving knowledge and retention.  The course is available on the ABA eLearning platform.  Log in via the link above.

Through a series of 13 self-paced online modules in approximately 8 hours total training time, tellers will learn the fundamentals and be ready to work the line with a more experienced teller.  This training package can significantly accelerate the process of preparing your new tellers to begin serving customers.  It is most effective when used in the first month on the job.

Price:  $150 NYBA members; $200 non-members.  Discounts are available when registering 10 or more tellers.

  • Explain the basic steps in processing a check
All About Deposits
  • Identify the deposit slips required for various types of accounts
  • Determine if a deposit slip is filled out correctly and completely
  • Recognize "Exact Amount" and "Change Back" deposits
Balancing
  • Explain the steps in the balancing process
  • Determine if your drawer is balanced or not
  • Know what to do if you are over or short
Check Cashing Process
  • Factors to be considered in making decisions to cash
  • Types of endorsements for check cashing
  • The importance of knowing and following bank policy and procedures
  • When to refer check-cashing situations for supervisory approval
Counting Money
  • Arrange and count currency using a prescribed method of counting
  • Strap currency and roll coins in the proper amounts
  • Set up cash drawers
Currency and Coins
  • Correctly identify features of genuine currency
  • Detect features of counterfeit currency
  • Explain the requirements for obtaining full value of mutilated currency
Endorsements
  • Define the most common types of check endorsements used by individuals and businesses
  • Identify the types of endorsements acceptable and not acceptable for check cashing and check deposit purposes
  • Recognize several other types of endorsements and those that require supervisory approval for check cashing
  • Correctly handle several problems with endorsements
Fraud
  • Identify fraudulent and counterfeit checks
  • Avoid losses from common check and cash related schemes directed at financial institutions and their customers
Importance of Identification
  • Understand how identification procedures protect you and the bank
  • Explain acceptable forms of identification for check-cashing purposes
  • Recognize unacceptable forms of identification
  • Describe situations in which two forms of identification are required
Payment Processing
  • Identify which consumer loan products feature fixed payments and which involve variable payments
  • Recognize regular loan payment situations, when partial or additional payments are acceptable, and when late payments are required
  • Offer alternative payment options, such as ATM, automatic deductions and online banking
